About Us
Black Sheep Woodworks was built to fill a gap most people don’t notice until they try to buy lumber for a real project.
There’s a big difference between bulk supply and finding a single board you can trust. Most systems aren’t built for that. Good material gets set aside, broken up, or never makes it to the people who actually want to work with it.
We built Black Sheep to change that.
What started as a way to move smaller runs and one-off pieces grew into a focused operation with a different approach. Instead of treating lumber like a commodity, we treat it like something that’s meant to be used. That shows up in how we process it, how we price it, and how we send it out.
We operate out of rural west central Wisconsin, where woodworking is part of everyday life. Our lumber is kiln dried on site, processed in-house, and handled using the same equipment and standards we rely on every day. From rough stock to surfaced, project-ready boards, we stay involved in the parts that actually matter.
Live edge is a big part of what we do.
A lot of live edge slabs online are either priced out of reach or listed in a way that makes them hard to buy. Oversized pieces, unclear sizing, unpredictable quality, and prices that only make sense for large builds. That leaves a lot of people out.
We’ve taken a different approach. We break slabs down into usable sizes, keep pricing grounded, and focus on pieces that can realistically be turned into shelves, smaller builds, and everyday projects. The goal is to make live edge more accessible without lowering the standard of the material itself.
We don’t cut our own logs. We work with sawmills in our area for green lumber, then take it through drying, milling, and surfacing ourselves. That control is what allows us to stand behind what we send out. Moisture content, stability, and usability are part of the process, not a guess.
A lot of lumber sold online passes through multiple hands before it reaches the customer. In some cases, it’s bought, lightly processed, and resold with very little visibility into how it was dried or handled. That’s where problems start.
We’ve built our process to avoid that. Fewer variables, tighter control, and a higher standard for what gets shipped. We focus on consistent moisture content, clean surfacing, and realistic sizing so what shows up is usable, not a gamble.
That approach shows up in the feedback we get from customers. Most of it comes down to the same things. The wood arrives as described, it’s usable right away, and it holds up to real projects. That consistency matters, especially when you’re buying lumber online.
We’re not trying to make every board look perfect, and we’re not listing pieces just to move inventory. If it’s not something we’d use ourselves, it doesn’t get shipped.
The name Black Sheep reflects how we approach this. We’re not trying to follow the standard model, and we’re not interested in cutting corners just to move more volume.
We’re building this the right way, even if it takes longer.
