Our 4/4 Gray Elm lumber is a great choice when you’re looking for durable hardwood with unique grain character and excellent versatility. Each board is kiln-dried, then planed and sanded smooth to a consistent thickness, and straight-lined on both edges for clean, square stock. Gray Elm is known for its interlocked grain, natural movement in the figure, and rustic appearance, making it a popular choice for furniture, cabinetry, shelving, and custom woodworking projects.

Perfect for tables, cabinet parts, drawer fronts, frames, panels, shelving, and a wide range of woodworking applications.

What to Expect:
Each board will feature natural variation in grain, texture, and color. Gray Elm commonly displays a mix of light to medium brown tones with occasional darker streaking and strong grain movement. You may see small knots, mineral streaks, or other natural markings that add character to the wood. Thickness is listed as 4/4 nominal, with a finished thickness of approximately 7/8" after surfacing and sanding. Boards are milled square and straight, though slight movement can occur with changes in humidity.

Width & Length Notes:
Widths are milled to size but may vary slightly within normal tolerances. Boards may be slightly over length to allow for final trimming.

Important Notes on Movement:
Wood is a natural material and will move with changes in humidity and environment. We recommend allowing boards to acclimate before final milling or installation.

Finishing Tips:
Gray Elm machines and finishes well, and its grain character can really stand out with the right finish. Oil finishes, polyurethane, hard wax oils, and stains all work well depending on the final appearance you want. We recommend testing finishes on an offcut before final application.
