4/4 Red Elm Lumber – Kiln Dried Hardwood S4S Boards

Red Elm lumber is a versatile hardwood with strong grain character, warm natural color, and distinctive figure. Each board is kiln dried, planed and sanded smooth, and straight lined on both edges for clean, square stock.

Red Elm is a great choice for furniture, cabinetry, shelving, drawer fronts, tables, panels, frames, and a wide variety of custom woodworking projects.

Natural Character

Red Elm commonly features warm brown to reddish-brown tones, strong grain movement, and occasional darker streaking. Small knots, mineral streaks, color variation, and other natural markings may be present.

Each board will have its own combination of grain, texture, and color, making every piece unique.

What to Expect

The lumber is surfaced to approximately 7/8" from its 4/4 nominal thickness. Boards are milled straight and square, but slight movement can occur as the wood responds to changes in humidity.

Widths are milled to size within the stated tolerance. Boards may be slightly over length to allow for final trimming.

Acclimation and Wood Movement

Wood is a natural material and will move with changes in temperature and humidity. We recommend allowing the lumber to acclimate to its final environment before final milling, installation, or assembly.

Finishing

Red Elm machines and finishes well, and its natural grain character can become more pronounced after finishing. Oil finishes, polyurethane, hard wax oils, and stains can all be used depending on the desired appearance.

We recommend testing your chosen finish on an offcut before applying it to the finished project.
