Our 8/4 steamed Black Walnut is a great choice when you need thicker stock that’s stable, clean, and ready to work with.

Each board is kiln-dried, then planed and sanded smooth to a consistent thickness, and straight-lined on both edges for clean, square stock. Steaming gives the wood a more uniform, darker brown tone, making it ideal for projects where consistency matters.

Perfect for table legs, mantels, furniture builds, and any project where you need the strength and presence of thicker walnut.

What to Expect

Each board will have its own natural grain and color variation.

Steaming helps create a more uniform appearance, but boards will not be identical. If you need closely matched pieces, feel free to reach out.

Thickness is listed as 8/4 nominal, with a finished thickness of approximately 1-7/8" after surfacing and sanding.

Boards are milled square and straight, but as with all natural wood, slight movement can occur with changes in humidity.

Important Notes on Movement

Wood is a natural material and will move with changes in humidity. Slight bow, cup, or twist can occur.

We recommend allowing your material to acclimate before final milling or installation.

Why Steamed Walnut

Steaming blends the contrast between heartwood and sapwood, giving walnut a more consistent, rich brown tone that’s especially desirable for furniture and higher-end projects.

Finishing Tips

Walnut is easy to work with and finishes extremely well.

For furniture or structural pieces, polyurethane or hardwax oil provides strong protection. For food-contact items, mineral oil or beeswax are great options.
